The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Jigawa State has pledged its support to the state police command in its efforts to combat crime and drug abuse for sustainable peace and progress in the state.

The Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Muhammad Zangina Kura, made this pledge when he led members on a courtesy visit to the office of the newly posted Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad.

Comrade Zangina stated that the visit was for familiarization and to strengthen the working relationship with the command. He added that there has been a long-standing, cordial relationship between the police and journalists in Jigawa, which they are ready to maintain with the new CP.

“Security is a collective responsibility,” Zangina said. “On our part, besides reporting the efforts taken by the police to promote security, we enlighten the public on the role they are expected to play during different times and incidents. We also sometimes draw the attention of security agencies to issues so they can take proactive measures to avert crime or a breakdown of law and order.”

He also assured the CP of the chapel’s commitment to work hand-in-hand with the command to implement new strategies, which align with the broader objectives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to promote inclusiveness in combating crime and maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria.

In his response, Commissioner of Police CP Dahiru Muhammad described the media as a critical partner in the fight against crime and in maintaining peace and stability in society.

He said the media is pivotal in promoting security consciousness and enlightening everyone on the role they are expected to play in maintaining peace. The CP added that besides reporting police activities, the media also builds public confidence in security institutions, making it easier for the public to provide the police with vital information.

The newly posted CP noted that his new approach will emphasize streamlining collaboration with the community by creating a sense of belonging in any matter related to the fight and wellbeing of society.

“This time around, we will extend our relationship with the community beyond security to build public confidence in the police and help everyone understand the role they are expected to play in promoting peace and stability,” the commissioner stated.

“Some of the strategies includes: Proactive Policing:, Creating public confidence and trust in the police, Diligent Investigation and Prosecution: To ensure fair and prompt dispensation of justice. and Community Policing”. CP Dahiru stated

He then called on journalists to support the command in all aspects for the full implementation of these new security approaches to combat crimes and drug abuse in the state.
