Pressure Mounts on Sule Lamido To Quiet PDP

By: Muhammad Garba

In a significant move that signals deepening cracks within Nigeria’s main opposition party, a key political bloc loyal to former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has publicly called for him to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The group, under the banner of the “Former PDP Jigawa State Local Government Chairmen Forum,” issued the demand in a press statement they issued following an emergency meeting at the party’s secretariat in Dutse.

The group maintained that, PDP has “lost its focus” and the vibrancy needed to be an effective political force, describing the party’s national leadership as “a disgrace.”

The forum added that the PDP is plagued by a “crisis of confidence and internal conflicts” that have caused it to stray from the core principles established by its founding fathers, a group which includes Lamido.

The group condemned an incident where Lamido was allegedly maltreated and disrespected when he visited the party’s national secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, to purchase a nomination form for the national chairmanship position.

However they labeled the event of so-called party national convention held in Ibadan and show of shame occured at party secretariat Abuja as a disgrace and embracement to all party members.

“Sule Lamido is one of the few surviving founding fathers of the party. As his loyalists, we cannot continue to watch anyone disrespect him, nor can we bear the embarrassment brought upon the party by opportunists,” the statement read.

“Therefore, we are calling on our leader, Alhaji Sule Lamido, to dump the PDP for a better alternative party that can provide him and other well-meaning Nigerians a favourable platform to liberate Nigeria.” the group stated

This development comes amidst a wave of high-profile departures from the PDP and just hours after another founding father, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
