The historic event will coincide with the launch of the Maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference (ADIC) and is scheduled to take place from August 14-15, 2024, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.Speaking at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Defence Conference Hall in Abuja, Matawalle highlighted the theme of the anniversary, “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology.

”The theme reflects DICON’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s defense capabilities through strategic partnerships, innovation, and technological advancements.

Matawalle emphasized the significance of the recently enacted DICON Act 2023, which he said has the potential to greatly contribute to Nigeria’s national development and security.

“The new DICON Act will enhance foreign exchange earnings through the local production of defense equipment, create jobs for skilled Nigerians, and reduce capital flight to foreign nations,” he stated.Established in 1964, DICON has been a pivotal force in Nigeria’s defense manufacturing sector.

Over the last six decades, the corporation has played a crucial role in enhancing national security and promoting technological advancement.

“DICON’s 60th anniversary marks a significant milestone in our journey of innovation, resilience, and dedication to the defense needs of our nation,” Matawalle remarked. The Minister outlined DICON’s journey, noting its evolution from a modest start in the production of small arms and ammunition to its current capabilities, which include the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defense equipment.“Despite facing challenges, DICON has persevered, driven by its commitment to self-reliance and national security,” he said. The anniversary celebrations, which began on August 9, 2024, will introduce a new era for DICON as a Military Industrial Complex, following the signing of the new DICON Act by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 23, 2023.

One of the key events of the celebration is the Africa Defence Industries Conference (ADIC), which will serve as a premier platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to collaborate, share insights, and explore the future of defense technology in Africa.

The Minister invited innovators, startups, and research institutions to participate in the Defence Innovation Challenge, which seeks to enhance national and regional security through innovative solutions. The week-long celebration will also include an exhibition and virtual tour of DICON, along with the launch of the new DICON Strategy and Brand Identity on August 14.

The closing ceremony on August 15 will feature a book launch and a commemoration of DICON’s past Board Chairmen and Director Generals.

“We extend a warm invitation to all stakeholders, partners, and the public to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion,” Matawalle concluded.
