EU prepares new sanctions for Russia after Putin\u2019s absence at Istanbul<\/p>\n

Key European leaders sought Friday to project a united front with US President Donald Trump on ending the war in Ukraine, after direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv wrapped up with no breakthrough on a ceasefire.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
As the talks concluded in Istanbul, the leaders of France, Germany, Britain and Poland \u2014 together with Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelensky \u2014 called Trump from the sidelines of a summit in Albania, to debrief him and plan their next steps.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The call involved Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, and Donald Tusk, the same group that travelled last week to Kyiv in a show of support, when they also made a call to align their positions with Trump.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Moscow has consistently rebuffed calls for an unconditional ceasefire.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It is \u201cunacceptable that Russia and President (Vladimir) Putin have not responded, for a second time, to the demands made by the Americans, supported by Ukraine and the Europeans,\u201d Macron told reporters after the call.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to fight for peace, we continue to stand by President Zelensky and coordinate very closely with the United States,\u201d added Macron.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He said European nations were coordinating with Washington on additional sanctions should Russia continue to refuse a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Macron said they would be exchanging again with Trump once the Ukrainian side receives a response to the \u201cdemands put to the Russian delegation\u201d, which he expected \u201cin the coming hours\u201d.<\/p>\n

Starmer likewise told reporters the Europeans and Trump \u201care now closely aligning and coordinating our responses and will continue to do so\u201d.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He and Tusk, like Macron, described the Russian stance as \u201cunacceptable\u201d, while Merz declared himself \u201cvery disappointed\u201d in the outcome from Friday\u2019s talks \u2014 which Putin shunned, sending a second-level delegation instead.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThe message was clear. The Russian side had not shown any goodwill,\u201d said the Polish leader.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will continue to work together,\u201d Tusk said, underscoring that the \u201cmain task is to maintain full unity between our European and American partners on the Ukrainian issue\u201d.<\/p>\n
